Committed to Running

A couple of my friends recently decided that they would like to run a half marathon. We picked the latest race we could find this year, the Vancouver Historic Half, so they would have time to train. The run consists of two laps of the Seawall and happens in late November. I’m sure we will freeze our butts off.

After a lot of humming and hawing I also decided to register for the Vancouver Marathon … the full 26.2 miles. I’m in the best shape of my life and have seven months to train so I figured if I don’t try it now, I never will.

I’m both excited and terrified.

My training plan right now consists of running Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings with a long run on Saturday, doing hot yoga on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and resting on Sunday. This may change, but the main thing I want to accomplish right now is to establish a habit if exercising before work each weekday morning.

After the half marathon in November, I want to find or develop a more formal marathon training plan. I’ve started researching training already but I want to find one that suits my novice running experience, long training period, and busy schedule. I had given thought to doing a training program through a company or organization, but it is difficult and time-consuming to get to these places without a car. I would, however, like to find a one or two day running workshop of some sort.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice on training plans or workshops, I’d love to hear it!
