Altra EggCellent Adventure!

I first noticed Altra Running shoes in a magazine. I saw an elite athlete in runners with a footprint on the bottom. I thought wow, those are so cool! And I hoped that one day I’d be badass enough to wear shoes like that.

As I moved from road running over to mainly trail running I experimented with a whole new realm of shoes: Nike Terra Kiger, Salomon Speedcross, Salomon Sense Pro, Hoka Challenger ATR, and I’m sure a few others. Some were bad and some were okay, but nothing came forward as a clear winner.

Eventually a couple trail running friends and gurus got into Altras and started talking about how amazing they were. I got my first pair, the Torins, at the Ventura Marathon expo and wore them the very next day for 42.2 km. I fell in love with them and now have added trail Altras to my collection as well. I now wear Altras for all my runs!

The moral of this story is that Altras are for everyone, whether you are fast or slow (like me) or whether you are racing or just out having fun. They have two very notable features: they have a “footshape toe box” meaning that there is room for your toes to relax and spread out; and they also have zero drop between the forefoot and the heel. They have a number of models that vary in cushioning from light all the way to maximum. Note: it’s recommended that you transition to the zero drop shoe gradually, unlike what I did.

Since Altra is still a smaller brand among the running shoe giants, it can sometimes be difficult to find a store that carries them, however, I have good news! Altra now has shoes in 20 Running Room stores across Canada (see list below). They have 2 models currently stocked in select Running Room locations – the Torin and the Impulse. If you are near one of these stores, I encourage you to go try them on and chat with the Running Room employees.

But wait … there’s more! On Easter weekend I will be hiding an Easter Egg that has a FREE pair of Altra Running shoes inside (well actually a certificate for them)! Follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for details and hints. I’ve also organized a run which will be your best chance of finding the shoes since we will be starting early! Join my event here.

*Bonus!* There will also be one hidden on the 5 Peaks orientation run at Alice Lake on Saturday March 26!
